Lawrence, KS
Welcome to Side x Side 2024!
Serving as the county seat and being the sixth-largest city in the state of Kansas, Lawrence sits in the northeastern part of the state between the Kansas and Wakarusa Rivers. Lawrence is home to both the University of Kansas (home of the Jayhawks—founded in 1865) and Haskell Indian Nations University (home of the Fighting Indians—founded in 1884).
Founded by the New England Emigrant Aid Company and named for Amos A. Lawrence, an abolitionist from Massachusetts who offered financial aid and support for the settlement, Lawrence began as a center of free-state politics. Known as the anti-slavery capital, Lawrence continued to grow and build, diversifying into many industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, and education.
Lawrence has grown and thrives in manufacturing and education but currently has a rising population of those experiencing homelessness. However, Lawrence is one of the most supportive communities of those who are in that situation, providing free meals at local restaurants, recently building a shelter, and changing laws so that individuals may not be discriminated against and are treated fairly. As all cities, Lawrence has come a long way from its early days, and the people there are proud of its growth. However, 7.3% of families and 18.8% of the population as of 2020 were below the poverty line. So, there are many who need help.
God has called you to be his hands and feet in the city of Lawrence, KS and its surrounding area. You have answered the call and will travel to the city to “do the work God has prepared in advance for you to do.” Your work and the relationships you make will become part of your legacy.
May God shine in and through you as you share your heart and your gifts with the people of Lawrence, KS. Thank you for saying “yes”!
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24

Homebound Mission
When God calls us to serve, typically we can come up with a thousand reasons to hesitate. When God calls us to serve we often do a quick survey of our personal skills, and decide the call may not match our gifts. When God calls us to serve, we often times miss the opportunity to be His hands and feet.
God has called you and you’ve said “YES”!
Hope @ Home will give us the opportunity to make a difference in our own backyard. We are called to help the homeless, feed the hungry, share fellowship and conversation with the elderly, provide help to those with physical challenges, and so much more. God didn’t hesitate to call us for he knows our gifts. Our human world can be full of chaos and stress, and in the midst of all we try to accomplish, we tend to forget we do nothing alone. When we slow down and notice the power of God, we can be overwhelmed by His grace and mercy. Serving God and His kingdom is a blessing. During Hope @ Home we will partner with God and overwhelm our neighbors with our generosity, compassion, loyalty, and love. The kingdom is vast, but together, with God’s help, we can make a difference one small area at a time.
Thank you for saying “yes” to serving together and bringing hope to our neighbors so very close to home.
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
