CROP Hunger Walk

Sunday, October 20 at Grace Church

In the early years after the devastation of WWII, the European and Asian continents were dealing with extensive hunger.  Church World Service (now CWS) was born in 1947 in order to gather grain from Midwest farmers and ship it overseas. My father, Frank Dale Hartman, a Wheatland Township farmer, was a 1950 township chairman in what was called the Christian Rural Overseas Program (now called CROP). Fast forward to 1969 when the world-wide need to combat hunger remained.  The first CROP Hunger Walk was started in North Dakota to raise money (rather than grain) to fight hunger with CWS.

Grace Church has been participating in the Naperville Area CROP Hunger Walk for over 40 years. In association with several other area churches and Monarch Landing, over $41,000 was raised last year. 25% of the funds raised are allocated to local charities: Loaves & Fishes and Northern Illinois Food Bank. The remainder goes to support the global mission of CWS. They provide disaster assistance, food and nutrition programs, refugee services, and many more programs. Visit their website at CWSglobal.org.

This year, the Naperville Area CROP Hunger Walk kicks off at 12:30PM on Sunday, October 20 in the lower lot. You can help by joining the Grace Church Team or making a donation to a team member at Naperville Area CROP Walk Grace church.  You can also write a check payable to “CWS/CROP” and place in offering plate. After the 5K walk through the neighborhood, the walkers will pack over 500 meal packs for Loaves & Fishes. Your help is greatly appreciated! Please contact Larry Hartman with questions at LEHartman@sbcglobal.net.
